Reading East of the Berlin Wall
Original language description
Drawing on the analyses of book production and reception in the countries of East and Central Europe during the Cold War we argue that focus on the materiality of textual communication in centrally controlled cultural contexts (e.g. paper allocation and shortages, manipulation of print runs, home libraries, pirate publishing, i.e. samizdat, etc.) allows us to challenge simplified understanding of key concepts of mainstream history of books and reading.
