The essay discusses the treatment of religious belief in the Gaelic poetry of Derick Thomson (1921-2012), from the Outer Hebridean island of Lewis, off the northwest coast of Scotland, surveying Thomson&apos;s poems about his encounters with varieties of Presbyterianism, notably the Free Church, and exploring also nuances and religious allusions in poems about his own experience.
