Nederlandse literatuur van de jaren negentig wordt gekenmerkt door een aanzienlijke toename van het aantal zogenaamde multiculturele (of interculturele) auteurs (politieke vluchtelingen en tweede-generatie migranten). Jana Beranová en Jan Stavinoha, twee auteurs van Tsjechische afkomst die in de vroege jaren tachtig debuteerden in poëzie en fictie, namen niet volledig deel aan deze trend. Dit artikel gaat over de ontvangst van het werk van deze twee ballingen in Nederland en de mogelijkheid van hun intrede in de literaire canon. Een van de aspecten die meer in detail zijn onderzocht, is hun zelfpresentatie, namelijk of en in welke mate zij hun ballingschap benadrukten.
