Seasonality and logistics of the late medieval and early modern cattle trade in Hungary
Original language description
The paper discusses spatial logistical aspects of the Hungarian cattle trade in thelate 16th century. In addition to the most important sources (customs registers)generally known to economic historians, the importance of spatial evidence (atopographical approach) is emphasised, as this theme has been relatively neglectedin previous scholarship. Due to the frequency and large volume of cattle transports,a complex infrastructure developed along the droveways - primarily in the vicinityof major trade centres and in the region of the Great Hungarian Plain. Fencedpastures, crane wells, and roadside taverns were essential for the logistics of thesetransports, and altogether they are very characteristic of and important for thelandscape heritage of the Great Hungarian Plain. Inevitably, the organisation ofcattle transports was also based on local ecosystem services and had to take intoaccount seasonally changing conditions.
