Lemkos, a Group Whose Unity Eludes Even the Radiance of the Watra
Original language description
The Lemkos, a distinctive ethnic group with roots in the Carpathian Mountains, have forged a uniquecultural identity shaped by their language, traditions, and historical experiences. This study delvesinto the intricate dynamics of the "Łemkowska Watra" (Lemko Bonfire), a symbol embodying bothunity and division among the Lemko community. Originating in 1983, the Watra marks a renaissanceof Lemko identity, resonating with communities worldwide. However, it also serves as a poignantillustration of the divisions within the Lemko community. This research scrutinizes the contrastingperspectives of pro-Ukrainian and pro-Rusyn factions, revealing how differing national affiliationshave shaped Lemko identity.
