Hittite Common-Gender āi-stems Revisited
Original language description
With the rapid pace of Hittite and Indo-European studies in recent years, even the basic categories, such as the nominal stem classes, call for revi-sion. This contribution discusses afresh the nominal āi-stems of commongender, whose ablauting suffix invites evaluation in the context of ablautpatterns in Proto-Indo-European (PIE). Here I offer a brief overview ofthe group, with focus on their etymological affinities. Although relativelymany of these stems have PIE root etymologies, hardly any of the stemsare inherited from PIE and must be inner-Hittite creations.
