The Dream as an Encounter and an Event : Richard Weiner's Lazebník (The Barber; 1929)
Original language description
The chapter deals with the concept of the dream as developed in Lazebník (Poetika) (The Barber (A Poetics)) by the Czech author Richard Weiner (1884-1937). The book contains a long introductory essay in which the author presents his theory of the dream as an event. The specific way in which dreams appear is fundamental for his literary work. An analogy can be observed here with the concept of Erlebnis, as outlined by Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002) in reference to Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911). It is the structure of the dream's manifestation that is important for the meaning of the dream, according to Weiner, as will be illustrated by the analysis of another prose piece in the collection, Long is the Way to Tipperary, which can be read as a literary analogy for the lucid dream.
