Trésaguet's revolution and the birth of the modern paved roads (1775-1785)
Original language description
The progressive centralization of the Kingdom of France in the 17th and 18th centuries forced the central government to restructure the road network, which, due to neglect, made any transport impossible. It became apparent that building roads according to the Roman method was unsatisfactory and the court sought to adapt communications to the increasing movement of people, troops and goods. The solution was brought by Pierre Marie Jérôme Trésaguet in the 1770s, whose revolutionary method of durable and cheap roads became a model for the construction of roads for almost half a century.
