Tuberculosis and "the other"
Original language description
In my analysis, I intend to explore the evolving social and cultural perceptions of tuberculosis during the 19th century and their impact on the notion of "the other". How perception of tuberculosis shifted from being a romantic disease, a fashionable disease, to something associated with poorness, with people living on the fridge of society. My study will place against one another two contrasting perspectives: the central European view of tuberculosis as both a social problem of the poor strata as well as a malady of poets and artists, and the perception of tuberculosis on the British Isles, specifically in Ireland. Through these case studies, I aim to demonstrate that the term "the other" can be associated with tuberculosis, however it must be applied carefully and always be considered within the specific societal framework.
