Was Socialism Weird? (Im)Possibilities of Left-Wing Cultural Memory

  • Original language description

The heritage of former socialist regimes in East-Central Europe is considered as a conflicting legacy which still affects memory practices. It is also reflected in preserving and displaying material and intangible heritage of socialism as the idea, often being either "kidnapped" by bare condemning interpretation or simplified for purposes of commodified nostalgia. As stated by Todor Kuljić (2021), factual absence of a coherent left-wing narrative about the recent past is partially caused by the political left itself, being paralyzed by its "non-heroic defeat" in East-Central Europe and unable to create its own memory culture. Although interest in various aspects of socialist era rises in academic research, in memory culture the "socialist man" has somehow become a Stranger - being objectified through stereotypes, misunderstood and sometimes even erased as an autonomous historical actor. The paper aims to reflect possibilities and obstacles for shaping left-wing memory culture in former socialist countries. Loosely following the author's dissertation research of museum presentation of contemporary history in the area, we will try to consider whether such memory can be a bearing part of general cultural memory, what are its possible carriers, and if it could be a way to "make socialist values great again".
