When Did the Jews Leave the Town? Credit Trade and the Expulsion of Jews from Eger (Cheb) in 1430/31
Original language description
In October 1430, King Sigismund issued a decree requiring the Jewish community to leave the town. However, this document did not lead to their immediate departure. On the contrary, in the following months, we observe intense negotiations between representatives of the Jewish community, prominent Jewish figures, and the town council concerning their departure from Eger (Cheb). Since some Jews were heavily involved in moneylending, their gradual exodus can be traced in the obligation registers. This suggests that the expulsion should be understood not as a sudden disruption of community life but as a process extending over more than half a year. This paper examines that process, with particular emphasis on the role of moneylending, and includes several passages from the original source.
