The Czech traveller Emil Holub and his African collection : Legacies of colonial aspirations and civilizational discourse
Original language description
The article focuses on the collections brought back from Africa by the Czech traveller Emil Holub (1847-1902), displayed in Czech museums. Tied to the artifacts and the museums in which they are deposited is the inescapable heritage of colonial oppression, purposeful "othering", and denigration of non-European peoples and cultures. In addition, there is also the legacy of competition among European nations and the perception of exotic artifacts as "trophies" and tokens of power and prestige
