Czechs in Late Ottoman Istanbul
Original language description
This article analyzes Czech-language narratives on travel to Ottoman Istanbul that took place between the 1860s and the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire in 1923. Through these narratives, it explores how Czech visitors perceived Ottoman Istanbul and its Turkish inhabitants and where they situated themselves in relation to the OttomanTurkish Other. Examining the Czech case in the context of imperial and East European travel, the article argues that while Czech-language travel writing produced an image of the Turks as the Other for Czech readers, the tenor of these narratives and the representation of the Other were affected by the absence of an imperial perspective.
