Could Agrippina Be the Snake? An Interpretation of unam omnino anguem in Tac. Ann. 11.11.3
Original language description
The article proposes a new interpretation of a phrase, and consequently of a passage, in Tacitus' Annales XI. The words unam omnino anguem are traditionally understood literally, referring to a snake believed to have guarded the young Nero in his bedroom. However, I argue that the phrase metaphorically refers to Nero's mother. Following his definitive break with Agrippina, Nero is said to have remarked that there was only one "she-snake" in his bedroom-his mother.
