Original language description
The publication of DisPlace: The Poetry of Nduka Otiono, offers an opportunity to examine Otiono's poetry against the backdrop of his memoirist's inscriptions of home and diaspora. The book, which also engages the memory of loss, love, and postcolonial bleakness of Nigeria, is a collection of new and selected poems from Otiono's earlier poetry books, Voices in the Rainbow and Love in a Time of Nightmares. My close reading of the text is underpinned by a postcolonial framework and linguistic analyses. I adopt Brenda Cooper's concept of the New Generation of African Writers, to examine how Otiono deploys allusive language, materiality and cultural links in detailing his psychic entanglement in migrant memoir and politics of home and diaspora. I argue that, with migrant memoirist eyes, the past returns to the present, and Otiono's poetry deftly invokes Nigeria's postcolonial woes, which continue to shape a generation of writers' consciousness in the cultural ambivalence of Nigeria's growing diasporic literature.
