On an extended classification of interpretants
Original language description
The study presents a nomenclature of interpretants (sign effects) and discusses its applications in extended semiotics. The proposed approach builds on Charles Peirce's idea that the interpretant is itself a sign that is produced by another sign (CP 5.138). Based on this, it is suggested that Peirce's ten-fold division of signs (EP 2:289-299) can be expanded into a classification of interpretants. The classification distinguishes between ten different kinds of interpretants, differentiating between poti-interpretants, sin-interpretants, and legi-interpretants; iconic, indexical, and symbolic interpretants; rhematic, dicent, and argumentive interpretants (Fomin 2023). The study then explores how this classification can be utilized to analyze and differentiate different kinds of semiosis relevant to linguistic semiotics, cultural semiotics, anthroposemiotics, zoösemiotics, or biosemiotics. It examines how different capacities to produce interpretants can distinguish between full-fledged signs and quasi-signs (CP 5.473). It demonstrates that proto-signs (Sharov and Vehkavaara 2015), tardo-signs (Bennett 2021, 191-205), and some zoösemiotic signs are characterized by diminished production of symbolic interpretants.
