Verbal aspect and stative construal in Czech
Original language description
The present article deals with the category of aspect in Czech and with some theoretical ramifications for aspect in general. So called perfective verbs may be part of an imperfectively interpreted language expression and vice versa. To manage these situations terminologically, a distinction is made between morphological aspect (given by the morphological make-up of the verb) vs. aspectual construal are distinguished. Aspect thus appears not as an inherent quality of the verb as a lexical unit, but as a matter of verb use. Special attention is given to the opposition 'process - state'. The opposition is treated in terms of the transition 'process -> state'. Relevant factors in this transition are the specificity/concreteness of the language expression construal, on-goingness of the event referred to (aktuální vs. neaktuální událost), its tense, modality, and adverbial temporal complements. The conclusions are supported by two corpus-based analyses, one analyzing capacitives, the other [t+MP] constructions (t - temporal adverb with durative meaning, MP - morphologically perfective verb). The result of the latter analysis is a classification of states into eleven semantic domains among which modal states predominate (about 35 % of the identified stative construals).
