• Original language description

When it comes to the concept of (individual) essence (Wesen), Bemerkungenüber das Wesen, die Wesenheit und die Idee (hereafter: BM) by Jean,Johannes or Hans Hering is by far one of the most important, yet understudied, writings of the early phenomenological tradition. According toRoman Ingarden, this work of the greatest philosophical significance is"the first phenomenological piece after the Logische Untersuchungen ofHusserl in which Husserl's doctrine regarding species (later 'das Wesen')was further developed" (Ingarden 1966, 309). Before raising the questionwhether-and to what extent-Ingarden's description is fully justified, letus remark that the publication of Hering's booklet ignited a debate thatbore upon the more general problem of the relation between doctrine ofideas, formal ontology and phenomenology (whatever this might mean).
