Valency and nouns denoting emotions in contemporary Czech: The case of indifference (lhostejnost, nezájem)
Original language description
The paper focuses on constructions in contemporary Czech that use a vari-ety of nouns to denote the concept of indifference (lhostejnost, nezájem). Using valency theory, selected theories of cognitive linguistics, and data retrieved from the synchronic corpus of written Czech, the author analyses syntactic roles played by the selected nouns, the linguistic encoding of selected components of the emotional context, the repertoire of verbs used in these constructions, and related metaphorical conceptualizations of indifference. The results indicate that contemporary speakers of Czech tend to understand indifference as a somewhat negative emotion, even though the state of indifference is typically associated with passivity and a lack of emotions.
