From Paris to Prague : Joseph Chlumský’s enduring commitment to Abbé Rousselot’s experimental phonetics
Original language description
Josef Chlumský played a crucial role in transferring and expanding the phonetic methods he had learned at Abbé Rousselot's laboratory in Paris to Czechoslovakia. His early work with Rousselot, particularly during the period from 1910 to 1914 when he served as Rousselot's assistant and collaborator, laid the foundation for his later contributions in Prague. Chlumský established a phonetics laboratory at Charles University, introducing advanced techniques such as kymography and X-ray imaging for speech analysis. Through his leadership, research, and collaboration with international scholars, Chlumský positioned Czechoslovakia as one of the centres of experimental phonetics during the interwar period. Importantly, he remained steadfast in his absolute commitment to Rousselot's methods throughout his academic career.
