The Second Life of The Chronicle of the Czechs in Modern Times: Historiography and Textbooks
Original language description
The study traces how the Chronica Boemorum evolved, from the late 18th century onward, into one of the central texts of Czech culture, historiography, and national identity. It follows the reception of Cosmas's work from the first critical editions by Dobrovský and Pelcl, through Palacký's conception of national history, the Manuscript controversies, the Fontes rerum Bohemicarum edition, and later interpretations, up to the present. The author shows how Cosmas transformed from the "father of Czech historiography" into an object of methodological and ideological reinterpretation. The text also explores the role of the chronicle in school textbooks, its artistic representations from Jirásek to Vančura, and its potential for new readings within contemporary didactics, cultural memory, and global perspectives (gender, environment, power). The study reveals how Cosmas's chronicle has shaped Czech historical consciousness for three centuries and remains a living text inspiring new questions about the past.
