Antonín Dvořák's Overtures to the First Setting of the Opera Král a uhlíř
Original language description
Antonín Dvořák's early opera Král a uhlíř [King and Charcoal Burner] is best known for the history of its composing: when the Provisional Theatre refused to perform Král a uhlíř because of its excessive difficulty, the composer rewrote the entire opera. The focus of the study, however, is on the overture (or overtures) to that opera. The overture to the original musical setting of the libretto also did not remain in its original form and was revised several times even after the new version of Král a uhlíř had come into existence with an entirely new overture. Thanks to recently found sources (especially performance materials), it has been possible to reconstruct the first (and longest) version of the overture. After an introductory overview of the composer's works in the fields of opera overtures (especially the overture to the opera Alfred) and concert overtures, attention is devoted to the versions of the overtures to the first musical setting of Král a uhlíř with an emphasis on their compositional history (why and how the revision was done) and their musical form; the former was supposed to have served as the overture to the opera, and the latter (Overture in F major) became a concert overture.
