An isolated gloss from Cato's Origines, appearing in Macrobius,has been interpreted as a unique survival of nominal syntax ofItalic *ambi 'around', a continuant of supposed Proto-IndoEuropean *h2ntbhí 'on both sides', specifically an ins. pl. of*h2ent- 'forehead, front'. The present article evaluates thearguments and aims to demonstrate that this unus testis has beenoverinterpreted and is, after all, as unremarkable as it firstappeared to Macrobius. The demise of Italic ambi is exploredwith the conclusion that as simplex, it may have survived in thesense 'along' with specific areal landmarks, and that it never hadthe assumed primary semantics 'on both sides'.
