Original language description
This paper offers a few ideas on the mythology of ancient Venetia, following Attilio Mastrocinque's seminal work on Venetic religion. Most Venetic cults are poorly attested, and Indo-European parallels are cautiously used as comparanda. The relevance of horses in ancient Venetia is discussed alongside the myth of Phaeton and its localization on the river Eridanus (modern Po). Ecological considerations indicate that the myth thematizes the curious combination of two essential elements, fire and water, which are also present in the myth of Aponus, the god of hot springs at Abano Terme/Montegrotto, famous for their curative properties in the ancient world. Aponus has a clear Indo-European parallel in the Vedic god Apām Napāt ("Child of the Waters"), who was said to be hiding in the waters, nourished by nymphs. Finally, the Greek hero Diomedes was worshipped at the mouth of the Timavus, where we find another pair of thermal springs adjacent to the cult of the river.
