The Secret History of the Mongols and its 1955 Translation into Czech by Pavel Poucha

  • Original language description

The Secret History of the Mongols dated back to the first half of the 13th century is the oldest and most significant literary work written in Mongolian. It recounts the life of Chinggis Khan (c. 1162-1227), his family and companions, the unification of the steppe tribes, the emergence of the Mongol Empire, and military campaigns. This captivating narrative provides a unique insight into the life of medieval Mongolian society. The text itself was preserved only in transription into Chinese characters with an interlinear translation and a brief summary in Chinese. The work did not receive the attention of the scholarship until the first half of the 20th century, and therefore its translation into Czech in 1955 counts among the first. It was done by Pavel Poucha (1905-1986), already the renowned orientalist, who devoted his entire life to research of languages and cultures of the peoples of Central Asia. The translation and research of The Secret History of the Mongols marked the beginning of his career in Mongolian studies, but also the beginning of Czech Mongolian studies as a field.
