This paper explores the translation and editorial history of Jules Verne's Voyagesextraordinaires in Czech, focusing on Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.Early Czech editions, notably by Josef Vilímek in collaboration with Hetzel, werewidely influential. During the communist era, new translations became the mostcirculated, and many modern editions still rely on translations over 50-100 yearsold, often with minimal revision. Building on prior research, this study analysesthese older translations alongside contemporary editions, highlighting tendenciesto domesticate the text, mirror French syntax, and render terminology imprecisely,affecting readability and fidelity. Framed by Risterucci-Roudnicky's (2008)translation theory, Šotolová's (2018) insights on post-Velvet Revolution French-Czech translations, and Janáček's (2004) contextualization of Czech literaryculture, the paper shows how editorial practices intersect with historical legacy,linguistic change, and reader accessibility.
