Economic Instruments of Protection of Nature and Biodiversity in the Law of Central European Countries
Original language description
Despite relatively strict legal regulations governing selected natural areas, the European Union is experiencing an alarming decline in biodiversity, which could have catastrophic consequences. Recently, there has been a growing trend towards seeking new ways to protect European nature and biodiversity more effectively. One category of measures that could strengthen the protection of nature and biodiversity are economic instruments. This article examines the different legal frameworks for economic instruments for the protection of nature and biodiversity in various Central European countries, with a particular focus on fees as economic instruments that work with 'negative incentives'. Several examples from Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, Austria and Germany are used to explain what they have in common, how they differ and what consequences this has for the protection of nature and biodiversity.
