The chapter introduces the general theory of capital and outlines critical points of the social capital notions of Bourdieu, Coleman, Putnam and Burt. Furthermore, it introduces Lin's concept of social capital and its critical points and contests the concept empirically. The results are used to refine general requirements for a social capital theory.
