The Journal Svědectví and the Struggle for Democracy in Communist Czechoslovakia
Original language description
This article discusses the evolution of the Czechoslovak exile journal Svědectví, which was founded by Pavel Tigrid in 1956. Svědectví was a balanced journal that addressed many controversial issues and, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, became a mouthpiece for dissidents persecuted in Czechoslovakia. As the main Czechoslovak exile journal, Svědectví publicized the plight of dissidents and its readers put pressure on foreign governments to act, thus helping to bring about the restoration of democracy in Czechoslovakia.
