In Search of the "Real" Czech Hip-Hop: The Construction of Authenticity in Czech Rap Music
Original language description
The purpose of this article is to examine the Czech hip hop subculture, especially rap music, and its "glocal" character as a result of the cultural translation of a former African-American oral culture. The article focuses on the way active participantsof Czech hip hop subculture construct their authenticity. Based on in-depth interviews with Czech hip hoppers, content analysis of their freestyle and written rhymes, and participant observation the author pays special attention to (1) the distinction of so-called mainstream and underground that influences the notion of what is "real" hip hop, and (2) gender, especially the position of female emcees within the Czech hip hop subculture and the gender dynamics.
