Security in the Israel-Palestine Conflict: Applying a Territorial Prism

  • Original language description

The concept of security is omnipresent in policymaking and popular discourse surrounding the Israeli-Arab conflict. However, it is also deeply contested. Israelis and Palestinians both prioritise their own national security, yet often see the conflict in zero-sum terms. Both peoples and polities are also divided within themselves as to how best to pursue security. Concurrently, Israelis and Palestinians alike closely associate territory with security. But the dynamics of this perceived territory-security relationship are fluid and subjective. Thus, by employing the prism of territory, this chapter scrutinises how contested conceptions of security affected the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The chapter argues that Israeli grand strategy has consistently pursued three goals: security, territory, and peace and examines how the relationships within this triumvirate have changed over time. In so doing, this chapter compares Israel's policies in the Gaza Strip and West Bank and identifies how the pursuit of security led Israel to withdraw from Gaza but, conversely, to strengthen and perpetuate its occupation of the West Bank.
