The Other or Visually Almost the Same? A Comparison of the Visual Coverage of Athletes with and without a Disability
Original language description
The study introduces and discusses the differences between the visual presentation of successful Czech athletes who attended the 2016 Rio and the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and Paralympics. The research focused on the representation of athletes on the official Facebook pages of the Czech Olympic Team and the Czech Paralympic Team. The aim was to compare the portrayal of athletes with and without a disability and to find out if there are any differences from the previous studies which focused on so-called "traditional" print media. We examined both common (i.e., a subgenre of sports photography) and specific (i.e., visibility of a disability) aspects of the images. We focused on social media as an important source of information about Paralympic sports.
