"Western" Views on the Root Causes of the Conflicts in the South Caucasus
Original language description
The contributor distinguishes between the "Western" views of the Western social scientific/academic perspectives and those of the main Western actors, the United States, and the European Union. Starting with the Western academic perspectives, Brisku enlists and details four rationales for explaining the root causes of the conflicts in the South Caucasus, namely, essentialist, instrumentalist, constructivist and institutionalist as well as three ideological schools of thought: neo-Marxism, liberalism, and realism. He establishes how the two Western actors assign to these conflicts largely instrumentalist and realist explanations.
