Negotiations of Belonging: Roma in the Czechoslovak Borderlands During the First Half of the 20th Century
Original language description
This article explores the negotiation of belonging in Nižný Medzev, a multilingual town in eastern Slovakia. Based on oral history interviews, archival documents, and regional periodicals, it primarily examines the perspectives and agency of local Roma during the turbulent transformations of the first half of the 20th century. The study aims to challenge the notion of Roma as "eternal outsiders" and highlight the shifting nature of social hierarchies. By focusing on actors with diverse linguistic and social backgrounds, the article underscores the fluidity of social processes within closed communities on the state's periphery. It examines the experiences and perspectives of those whose voices were rarely heard, as well as those who played a decisive role in implementing centrally formulated policies in remote regions.
