Patronalism (Henry Hale)
Original language description
Patronal politics place the informality of dictatorships' power politics at the center stage of analysis. Henry Hale developed this theoretical frame based on earlier conceptions of patronage, clientelism and neo-patrimonialism. It mostly concerns the power struggle within regimes, a dictatorship's grip over the state and its resources, the personalization of power and the transition when an incumbent becomes a lame duck.
