Original language description
The feminist perspective on political communication is concerned with how the societal distribution of status, roles, and power as well as the very definition of politics affects access of women to the public sphere, their representations, and their expression in it. This entry focuses on feminist perspectives on women's participation (political e-expression) in the digital public sphere. Despite the early hopes that the Internet will have an emancipatory and equalizing potential, research points out that marginalization of women persists in the digital sphere. The entry summarizes studies discussing the possible reasons behind the persisting digital gender gap, including psychological aspects, the group style of online environments and their gendered toxicity. Given the unprecedented rise of the anti-feminist backlash in the last years, the entry will also pay attention to studies explaining the anti-feminist alarmism published online and its interconnectedness with other anti-discourses.
