National Identity under a Magnifying Lens - a Study on National Identity in Germany, Poland and Russia
Original language description
This study is part of a research project committed to the analysis and reformulation of concepts of national identity as presented by heads of state of various European countries in their New Year's speeches. The project aim is to create a European map of national self-images. This study presents concepts of national identity of Germany, Poland and Russia as they were expressed in New Year's speeches between 2011 and 2022. The linguistic discourse analysis of the speeches revealed that each concept is individual in nature and encompasses a specific set of values and beliefs. The German concept of national identity is predominantly based on civic values. The Polish concept of national identity is based on ethno-cultural and civic values. The Russian self-image is rooted primarily in ethno-cultural values. The images of national identity seem to be at the core of a social community's worldview.
