This paper examines the tensions between the Slovak fascist regime's rhetoric of national renewal and modernization and the underlying realities of racialized exclusion, forced displacement, and economic exploitation that shaped its policies during World War II. Through an analysis of official public messaging - especially when it comes to harvest festivals and civilisational projects in rural eastern Slovakia - this article shows how the vision of progress was driven by Christian nationalism, a thin ideology built around a privileged "Slovak and Christian" nation. Jews and Roma were cast as obstacles to national revival, instrumentalized by a regime whose promises of transformation ended in exclusion, violence, and death. Finally, the article highlights the role of local actors in enacting and sustaining this racial order, challenging the view that it was simply imposed by the central government in Bratislava - whose own responsibility is often obscured by references to Nazi pressure - while overlooking the complicity of actors on the ground.
