Na rozdíl od spojité povahy většiny zkušeností je úlohou jazyka zavádět ostrá sématická rozlišení, a to na několika úrovních: fonémické, lexikální, morfologické atd. I materiál označujícího je tedy zpravidla spojitý, nicméně označovádím zavádí diskrétnípojmy.
