Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty never met and there are just a few (positive) notes of Heidegger about Merleau-Pontys thinking. From 1957 on Merleau-Ponty hold lectures at the College de France about Heideggers thinking (resulting in the book ""The visible and the invisble"") by sketching a project of ""modern thinking"" from Hegel and Marx to Heidegger, but even to artists as Cézanne and Klee or scientists as Goldstein or Köhler. The text studies first Merleau-Pontys reception of Heideggers ideas and the ""state of art"" of the research in this field. It continues by giving a detailed systematical comparison of their philosophical approach focusing on the concept of ""Gestalt"" (Merleau-Ponty) and ""Anwesen"" (Heidegger) as the categorical centre of theirphilosophy. In this sense these two thinkers of the phenomenological tradition are linked not mainly to Husserls intentional phenomenology, but to the tradition of the Gestalttheory instead.
