    The article is devoted to the personal role and importance of the first two leaders of the capital city of Prague after the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918 - Přemysl Šámal and Karel Baxa. It recapitulates their contribution to the creation of so-called Greater Prague as a modern state capital and describes the main problems they dealt with at the head of the city. The work draws attention to the importance and usefulness of researching the personal aspect for gaining an understanding of the development processes and vicissitudes of modern urban (and state) history.
