The Concept of Health in Old Norse Narative Literature
Original language description
The aim of this article is to show the holistic aspects of health as they appear in Old Norse narrative literature. Our starting point is the Old Norse concept of 'heill' (health) meaning 'sound', 'whole', 'hale', 'intact', 'merry' and 'blessed'. Health appears to be an inherent facet of man, with the psychological, physical, and spiritual realms not being strictly distinguished. The interconnection between the physical and mental planes, the body and soul, is further illustrated by the examples of eye pain as an involuntary physical manifestation of emotions.
