Curated Panel: ‘New Materialisms across the Natural Sciences and Humanities: Trajectories, Inspirations and Stirrings’
Original language description
This chapter captures conversations at the crossroads of interdisciplinary work in which the participating authors relate the implications of new (feminist) materialisms for their fields along with tensions and questions that emerge through this engagement. Some central provocations pick up with the complexity of new materialism's timing and how its non-linear methodologies already implicate the identity of new materialism in the work of (its) critique. Different perspectives on the politics of new materialism and notions of the political are engaged - a conversation that carries into how one understands the decolonising work of new materialism. As with the question of critique, the chapter discusses how a new materialist approach that unsettles the origins of action (such as those termed the Anthropocene) cuts into coloniality while also presenting a complicated understanding of relation, debt, and response. It concludes by asking after the types of action new materialisms might call for and the impacts that thinking with entanglement have for understanding what activism entails. Through these discussions the authors relate the trajectories of their work embedded in a range of texts and trans/disciplinary spaces that have helped to shape the researches and inspirations shared here.
