This is article delves into the public discourse surrounding the Spanish flu in Soviet Russia, examining the influential part played by the People's Commissar of Healthcare, Nikolai Semashko, in combating the epidemic. It delineates three distinct phases of perception and media portrayal of the epidemic, as well as the array of problems and challenges that the medical establishment encountered during this period. The study posits that the nature of the discourse and the strategic response to the epidemic were significantly shaped by ideological undercurrents, with Bolshevik leadership primarily driven by political utility. The officially reported low mortality rate of the Spanish disease, relative to Russian norms of the era, provided Semashko with propagandistic ammunition to endorse the alleged superiority of Soviet governance and communist dogma.
