Humoral and Elemental Theory in Early Medieval English Medicine

  • Original language description

This study is concerned with the textual evidence in Latin and Old English for the understanding of human physiology in early medieval England from the period before the Norman Conquest. This study explores the ways in which the Neoplatonic philosophy of early Christianity was influential in shaping the theory and practice of medicine in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, and I suggest that medical theory was specifically used and rewritten by such patristic authors as Isidore of Seville and the Venerable Bede.
