Foods for Body and Soul: The Application of Late Antique Regimen in Old English Medical Texts

  • Original language description

This chapter explores the relationship between food and medicine by asking how the dietary prescriptions found with the Old English text known as Bald's Leechbook conform to and transmit the late antique theory of dietetics or medical regimen, that is, the general lifestye guidance given by physicians to exercise eat, drink, sleep, bathe, and even engage in sexual intercourse according to the theoretical principles of Galenic Hippocratism. The Old English medical compilation known as Bald's Leechbook survives fom a single tenth century manuscript, making it the oldest vernacular medical compilation in Western Europe. This item demonstrates the surprisingly sophisticated engagement of early medieval physicians with Classical learning, while also highlighting the climatic and linguistic difficulties in the adaptation of ancient Mediterranean practices to early medieval North-western Europe.
