Original language description
Social work's transformative competences can make an important contribution to how to move beyond the paralysing stalemate apparent in polarising debates on current global political, economic and ecological crises which are all linked to a weakening of democratic capabilities. It is argued that in recognising the positive value of social work's 'in-between' disciplinary and professional position lies the potential for re-establishing democratic practices by giving discerning recognition to diverse positions through engagement rather than position taking. Historical reflections on key oppositional tendencies of modernity, such as rationality versus irrationality, unique identity versus mass existence, liberty versus equality and Gemeinschaft versus Gesellschaft show that in everyday practice, social work is intricately engaged in and constructively negotiates these tensions. Its core skills are fostering mutual understanding, democratic competencies in personal and collective relationships, and collective empowerment. Social work affirms a comprehensive understanding of 'social' as a nonlinear transformative project that encompasses human, economic, political and ecological relations. This requires a strengthened understanding of social citizenship and democratic engagement in sustainable development.
