Original language description
In 1910, Umberto Benigni authored the entry on Machiavelli for the multi-volume Catholic Encyclopedia (first edition 1907-1912). There is some evidence that Benigni's entry on Machiavelli was read by Strauss and influenced some of his formulations in Thoughts on Machiavelli, especially the distinction between a "treatise" and a "tract" and the claim that Machiavelli bequeaths his authority to an immoral way of thinking and acting that is "as old as political society." I discuss four formulations in Benigni's entry and conclude with a brief discussion of what we might learn from the possibility that Strauss read this entry and drew on some of its formulations
