Melioratio terre episcopalis – Property Securing of the Prague Diocese in the Context of Medieval Transformation
Original language description
The bishop of Prague, Tobias of Benešov (1278-1296), constituted a significant advance in the economic security of the Prague diocese. The partially preserved economic agenda from the time of his episcopate (comprising a fragment of an urbarium, charters, and a collection of forms known from several manuscripts) allows us to trace the bishop's strategy. This includes especially the emphyteutic locations of villages and market towns, the extension of their rights, the transformation of the nature of the bishop's tithe, the efforts to make individual districts function efficiently, and the written record of this agenda itself. The bishop was able to exploit the crisis of the so-called 'evil years' to the diocese's advantage in terms of its economic development and ecclesiastical emancipation.
