Original language description

The bishop of Prague, Tobias of Benešov (1278-1296), constituted a significant advance in the economic security of the Prague diocese. The partially preserved economic agenda from the time of his episcopate (comprising a fragment of an urbarium, charters, and a collection of forms known from several manuscripts) allows us to trace the bishop&apos;s strategy. This includes especially the emphyteutic locations of villages and market towns, the extension of their rights, the transformation of the nature of the bishop&apos;s tithe, the efforts to make individual districts function efficiently, and the written record of this agenda itself. The bishop was able to exploit the crisis of the so-called &apos;evil years&apos; to the diocese&apos;s advantage in terms of its economic development and ecclesiastical emancipation.
