    This article examines the symbolism of light and darkness in Ortodox iconography. First it looks back at the historical roots of this symbolism. Then it examines the symbolical expressions of light and darkness in three festal icons.In conclusion it showthat light and darkness ar not purely aestethical dimensions but light and so called" divine darkness" are the spiritual source and foundation of the whole Orthodox iconography.
